Climbers and mountaineers are often asked why they do the things they do, it’s a difficult question to answer.
For some it may purely be the enjoyment of visiting wild and beautiful places, or the sense of achievement that comes from navigating efficiently when conditions are rough. For others it may be fluid, graceful movement on rock high above the ground, or pulling hard moves on boulders by the sea. Perhaps just because it's really good fun!
The sheer diversity of these sports can offer limitless possibilities… Too good to be true? I suggest you book some time off work and come to experience it for yourselves. Beware though, there is a danger you may end up being hooked for life!
As well as some very fine hill walking, North Wales can boast an array of top quality crags with a wide variety of rock types and climbing styles; sea cliff climbing, roadside craging, limestone sport climbing, slate climbing, loads of bouldering and of course some big mountain crags too.
The area is also incredibly rich in climbing and mountaineering history. Throughout the development of these sports, the area has been home to climbs at the cutting edge of difficulty and strong pioneering climbers.
This is something that few other venues can boast. North Wales really does have it all, it’s a climbers paradise.
I am based in the village of Beddgelert, which is a beautiful place nestled in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia National Park) and perfectly situated half way between the popular climbing areas of Tremadog and the Llanberis Pass. Well within an hour, we could be climbing on some big sea cliffs on Anglesey or bouldering at the tip of the Lleyn Peninsula, walking into Clogwyn Ddu’r Arddu, or clipping bolts on the Great Orme.
I have lived in Beddgelert all my life (with the exception of a few lengthy climbing trips), the area is dear to my heart and there's nowhere I'd rather live.
I started climbing at the local cliffs of Tremadog at eighteen and have been climbing ever since. I now hold the Mountaineering Instructor Award and Winter Mountain Leader Award (follow this link for more information on these qualifications).
I run courses in climbing, scrambling and mountaineering, for people of all abilities and ambitions. I believe in keeping them small, highly flexible and tailoring them to suit your needs. I want to share the skills and techniques that I have learnt, that will help you on your way in becoming safe, efficient and inspired climbers.
